Rogue Rally First Impressions

Rouge Rally is a rogue lite kart racing game developed by 302 Interactive. This genre bending racing game provided me with a very unique and fun gaming experience. With crisp driving controls, a solarpunk style setting, and interesting lore, Rogue Rally is a game that I think everyone should be on the lookout for.




Presentation

Rogue Rally takes place in the future with a solarpunk style setting. In this world there are life forms known as “Enerdroids”, described as sentient androids that are powered by a variety of energy sources. In this demo, I played as an Enerdroid named Beacon. I loved the design of Beacon, from his neon green and black coloring to his solar panel design. The demo allows you to play in Zone 1 which is called Phythotron. The ruins and setting add a mysterious element to the tone and atmosphere of the game. Even though the game is in its early alpha stage I found the presentation to be really good.




Gameplay

The gameplay in Rogue Rally was very fun. It had all the tight and responsive driving mechanics that you would come to expect from a kart racing game, while also providing the play style customization that one would find from a rogue lite game. In Rogue Rally, the player is tasked with completing laps in an infinite loop while collecting power ups and coins, against the clock. The main goal of the game is to collect the three key pieces which will take you to the boss of that zone. The powerups you can collect while playing are as follows; Soul, which improves turbo speed and fuel generation. Mind which improves handling, drifting, and reduces the cooldown on mods. Body which improves top speed. While you can try to level up all three elements, I found that it was best to choose one or two to try to level up before running out of time. Once you’ve leveled up to your liking, and collected the three key pieces, the player is given the option to buy extra mods and power ups at the pit stop before taking on the boss. Rogue Rally has very fun gameplay and takes a good level of skill and strategy to complete the zone.




First Impressions

I had a really fun time playing Rogue Rally. It is a really unique game, and I can honestly say that I have never played anything like it before. I enjoyed the heart racing moments when I completed a lap with 0.2 seconds left and how it felt to beat the boss in a photo finish.
